History on the 12th of September, 275 years ago

This Saturday, the 12th of September, marks 275 years since the original East Indiaman Götheborg ran aground on the underwater rocks of Knippla Hunnebådan (close to the port of Gothenburg) and sank.

History on the 12th of September, 275 years ago

Back then, most of the ship's cargo was salvaged and the cannons and rigg were also taken out of the water.

More than 200 years later, in December 1984, the Swedish Maritime Archaeology Society in Gothenburg carried out the first dives on the wreck. This led to the idea to reconstruct the ship.

Author Anita Steiner participated in the excavation of the East Indiaman Götheborg, through documentation of the findings and the people that worked on the project.

We are very proud to announce that Anita Steiner will be at the ship this Saturday! She will give two lectures (in Swedish) about both the excavation and about the creation of the popular books "Jacob sails to China" and "Tånge Sjötroll".

We're looking for volunteers next week!

16 April 2025

Spring is truly here, and we’ve started getting ready to rig all three topmasts. We’re now looking for help with applying tar to the standing rigging. You’re welcome to join us for anything from a full week to just half a day. Unfortunately, we can’t offer accommodation, but we do provide lunch and have work clothes available. Please bring clothes you don’t mind getting dirty to wear underneath, depending on the weather. If you’re interested, please send an email to volunteer@gotheborg.se
