The second leg of the Asia Expedition 2022/2023 is between the Swedish city of Helsingborg and the Finish capital, Helsinki. This leg of the expedition will be six days of sailing, and what six days it will be. The Baltic Sea in summer is magical! The sun hardly sets before it’s on the rise again, in colours so grand it’s breathtaking – a timeless experience that Northern seafarers share across the millenniums.

Ever sailed where the sea is less salty? Join us for the Midsummer Run to Helsinki!
Helsinki, here we come! Götheborg of Sweden is warming up, and it’s time for the second leg of our two-year expedition. The passage from Helsingborg to Helsinki needs deckhands with a flair for 18th-century life at sea. Climbing the rig, taking in sails and learning the best knot to secure them, and scrubbing the deck at dawn – these are some of the tasks that await you.
Leaving Helsingborg in southern Sweden, Götheborg will work its way through waters less and less salty the closer we get to the capital of Finland. As midsummer’s eve is getting closer, we will sail through the beautiful archipelago. Finally, we can spot Helsinki on the horizon and anchor up in time for the Finnish way of celebrating the holiday. But let’s not romanticize too much. The deckhand life is full of chores, too, and that’s what you sign up for when joining us for the Midsummer Run. Ready to sail?
Anyone can apply to sail on board Götheborg as a deckhand and experience the unique adventure and life on board a 18th century ship. As a deckhand you sail together with the professional crew, but are not required to have any sailing experience and will get training on board. If this is your dream, don't hesitate to apply to become a deckhand on one of the sailing legs.
Spring is truly here, and we’ve started getting ready to rig all three topmasts.
We’re now looking for help with applying tar to the standing rigging.
You’re welcome to join us for anything from a full week to just half a day.
Unfortunately, we can’t offer accommodation, but we do provide lunch and have work clothes available.
Please bring clothes you don’t mind getting dirty to wear underneath, depending on the weather.
If you’re interested, please send an email to volunteer@gotheborg.se
