Asia Expedition 2022/2023

The ship Götheborg release first port stops of Asia Expedition – London and Bremerhaven

Gothenburg, 3 February 2022 – The ship Götheborg of Sweden today released two of the ports that the ship will visit on the European part of its two-year long Asia Expedition. First out are London and Bremerhaven. In the UK there is a strong historical connection to the East India Companies and great interest in the ship as a replica of an east Indiaman. In Bremerhaven, the ship will be the center of attention at a large maritime event with over 350,000 visitors and 80 different ships.

The two stops now released are not the first stops of the expedition, but they are the first to be made public. The ship Götheborg will be in London 8 – 12 August 2022 and in Bremerhaven 17 – 21 August 2022.

“ We are excited to now start announcing the port stops for the first part of the Asia Expedition”, said Kristoffer Bennis, Expedition Director at Götheborg. “More port stops will be announced shortly.”

Götheborg has previously visited Bremerhaven in 2010, 2012 and 2015. It is fifteen years since the ship last visited London, in May 2007, on the way home from the first Asia expedition.

” We’re looking forward to once again sail up the River Thames and salute the Londoners”, said Bennis. “The London stop is also very important to partners. Bremerhaven Maritime Days attracts sailing enthusiasts from all over the world, and the stop has been highly appreciated by both visitors and crew on the previous occasions that we’ve visited the event.”

To sail the ship, a crew of about 70 people is needed. About 20 are professional crew, the others are paying deckhands. As a deckhand it is not necessary to have any experience of sailing, it is for anyone who wants to experience sailing an 18th century ship. As the first two stops are now released, the possibility to apply for a deckhand position is also opened. The sailing leg London to Bremerhaven will take five days.

Asia Expedition 2022/2023

Götheborg will depart from Gothenburg in June 2022, and arrive in Shanghai in September 2023. The ship will sail the Baltic Sea and Northern Europe, before it continues to the Mediterranean. During winter 2022/2023 the ship will remain in the Mediterranean. It will sail to Asia in spring 2023. The mission for the Asia Expedition is to promote trade relations and use the ship as a unique platform for businesses and partners.

Short facts: The ship Götheborg – history

The Götheborg is a full-sized replica of an 18th century ship, that was owned by the Swedish East India Company, and that ran aground and sank outside of Gothenburg in 1745. In 1984 marine excavation of the original ship Götheborg was initiated and in 1995 the building of a new Götheborg was started. Eight years later, in 2003, the ship was launched, and between 2005-2007 the ship sailed the historical route to Asia and back. After that several expeditions around Europe were carried out, the latest one in 2015. In 2021 the ship sailed from Gothenburg to Stockholm and back.
