Götheborg of Sweden will be in Helsingborg 14 June – 17 June 2022. As the first port stop is announced, the departure date for when the ship leaves Gothenburg is also made public; 8 June 2022.
“ The port stop in Helsingborg and at H22 City Expo is a great start of our big Asia Expedition 2022/2023”, said Kristoffer Bennis, Expedition Director at Götheborg of Sweden. “H22 City Expo, with a strong focus on sustainability and innovation, aligns perfectly with our mission for the expedition; to work as a platform for trade, relations and solutions for a sustainable future.”
“ While sailing to Stockholm in 2021, we also saw a great interest in the ship Götheborg from both Helsingborg and the rest of Skåne”, said Bennis. “We are excited to be able to meet that demand.”
The ship will be moored at the City Quay, a prime location at the heart of Helsingborg, and will be open to the public during its stay in Helsingborg.
“ With her rich history and the important role that Götheborg of Sweden has played historically, and in Swedish trade with Asia, we in the Port of Helsingborg are very happy and proud to join H22 City Expo in welcoming her and her crew this summer”, said Mark Wieden, Cruise Manager, Port of Helsingborg. “ In conjunction with this very exciting visit, we have offered the ship a berth at the City Quay in the heart of Helsingborg. This will allow everyone to visit this magnificent ship when it docks during four days of the Expo.”
“ We welcome Götheborg of Sweden to Helsingborg and H22 City Expo and find it extra fun that it’s the first time she will drop anchor in Helsingborg”, said Soraya Axelsson, Head of H22 City Expo. “The visit means a lot to us because the expedition is focused on sustainability. The ship connects the past with what lies ahead and the importance of safeguarding our common future and what we leave for future generations”.
As Helsingborg is announced as the first stopover on the Asia Expedition, the possibility to apply to sail along as a deckhand on board on the first sailing leg is also opened up. To sail the ship, a crew of 70 people is needed. About 20 persons are professional crew. The other 50 are deckhands, who are members of the public that sail along for the adventure, experience and opportunity to learn how to sail an 18th century ship.
To sail straight from Gothenburg to Helsingborg takes only about a day, but the planned sailing leg will take seven days. The ship will follow weather and winds to really test the ship and the rig for the long voyage to Asia.
Note: The ship Götheborg has previously done two so called "silent stops" in Helsingborg, in 2008 and 2013, to take on provisions and change deckhands. The coming stopover is the first time that the ship makes an official visit to Helsingborg and is open to the public.
Asia Expedition 2022/2023
Götheborg will depart from Gothenburg 8 June 2022, and arrive in Shanghai in September 2023. The ship will sail the Baltic Sea and Northern Europe, before it continues to the Mediterranean. During winter 2022/2023 the ship will remain in the Mediterranean. It will sail to Asia in spring 2023. The mission for the Asia Expedition is to promote trade relations and use the ship as a unique platform for businesses and partners, and to promote solutions for a sustainable future.
Short facts: The ship Götheborg – history
The Götheborg is a full-sized replica of an 18th century ship, that was owned by the Swedish East India Company, and that ran aground and sank outside of Gothenburg in 1745. In 1984 marine excavation of the original ship Götheborg was initiated and in 1995 the building of a new G theborg was started. Eight years later, in 2003, the ship was launched, and between 2005-2007 the ship sailed the historical route to Asia and back. After that several expeditions around Europe were carried out, the latest one in 2015. In 2021 the ship sailed from Gothenburg to Stockholm and back.
