Asia Expedition 2022/2023

Götheborg will change its route to deliver an elephant to the Prince of Monaco

Instead of heading straight from Nice to Valletta as planned, the route has been changed and the ship is now also making a short stopover in Monaco. However, it is not just a regular stopover: It will include the spectacular delivery of a 2.4-meter-high elephant sculpture to H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco. The sculpture will be greeted with a gun salute from the Royal Palace of Monaco before being presented to H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.

Götheborg will change its route to deliver an elephant to the Prince of Monaco

The elephant sculpture named “Oceans of Hope” was presented to Prince Albert II of Monaco, together with The Perfect World Foundation’s annual honorary award, during an award-gala in Gothenburg in April 2022. It has since been on display in Gothenburg, but will now be delivered to Monaco on board the Götheborg.

The sculpture is designed with inspiration from animals that depend on our oceans. Its purpose is to draw attention to how ghost nets are killing our oceans.

“ The elephant sculpture alludes to the saying "the elephant in the room" and its purpose is to make more people aware of the problems in our oceans. Every year, 640,000 tonnes of ghost nets end up in the world's oceans, killing millions of marine animals and fish every year”, says Ragnhild Jacobsson, CEO, and co-founder of The Perfect World Foundation.

With the change of route, Monaco becomes the 11th stopover on the Asia Expedition 2022/2023. The ship will be in Monaco 4 October–6 October, will be moored at Port Hercule, Quai Rainier III, and will be open to visitors 5–6 October.

“ The well-being of our oceans is an issue close to our hearts, and therefore we didn’t hesitate to change our route to support and create awareness around this very important topic”, said Torben Hildemar, Captain on the Götheborg. “Ghost nets are a big problem that all of us who work out on the oceans have encountered On the Götheborg, we always have someone on lookout at the bow, to be able to spot and avoid ghost nets and illegal fish nets. We encountered illegal fishing nets several times on our voyage back from Asia in 2007.”

THE FRIENDS OF THE EAST INDIAMAN GÖTHEBORG INVITE YOU TO A WONDERFUL EVENING 19 MARS 18:00

19 March 2026

During the evening we will be joined by Mats Berggren, who during the construction period represented the Swedish Maritime Administration as a determined and persistent inspector, and Marie-Louise Edholm, who took part in building the rigging, has sailed with the ship, and has been responsible for the maintenance of the rig. You will gain insight into traditional craftsmanship, material choices, and the many challenges involved in combining historical authenticity with modern safety and operational requirements. If you were involved during this period, perhaps you have a story of your own to share. We would love to hear it! About halfway through the lecture, coffee and pastries will be available for purchase. All proceeds will go directly toward the re-rigging of the ship. Registration is free of charge. Please register by emailing: vanner@gotheborg.se A warm welcome! The Friends of East Indiaman Götheborg Association
