In August, we will attend the freshly started Gothenburg Row. During the cultural feast in Gothenburg, lots of traditional row boats will tour around the inner city canal.
As Götheborg is not doing any sailing this year, we thought it would be fun to use our ship boats instead. We got the opportunity to join in on the freshly started Gothenburg row on the 31st of August during the Gothenburg cultural festival, we will bring our two ship boats Mattias and Martin.
The initiative comes from Västkustens träbåtsförening and the idea came originally from the Hasselörodden in Västervik, Sweden.
Everyone that can, will dress up in early 20th century clothing, but since we have an 18th century ship we will keep our 18th century clothing while doing this.
The participation is free and anyone with a rowing boat can participate. The start is at Klippan and continues first cross the Göta river to Eriksberg to get Götheborgs ship boats with, and then to Rosenlund where we will enter the canal. Opposite of Pedagogen, we will stop for a snack, before continue through the whole canal back out in the Göta river and row back to Klippan again.
The aim with this row is to:
Maintain the cultural interest ”Row in traditional wooden boat”.
Doing something together on the water of Gohenburg.
Expand contact with likeminded and welcome guest rowers from other shores.
Save row boats made of wood before nature takes them back or inspire to new constructions.
Contribute to Svenska Sällskapet för Räddning af Skeppsbrutne.
The Gothenburg Cultural feast is from 29th of August to 1st of September. You can read more here:
Greencarrier och Göteborgs Stad är överens om att vilja skapa en långsiktig hemvist för Ostindiefararen vid Masthuggskajen. Målet är att fartyget ska spela huvudrollen i ett nytt historiskt upplevelsecentrum som ska stå klart 2031, och bidra till ett mer levande kajstråk nära Järntorget.
During the evening we will be joined by Mats Berggren, who during the construction period represented the Swedish Maritime Administration as a determined and persistent inspector, and Marie-Louise Edholm, who took part in building the rigging, has sailed with the ship, and has been responsible for the maintenance of the rig.
You will gain insight into traditional craftsmanship, material choices, and the many challenges involved in combining historical authenticity with modern safety and operational requirements.
If you were involved during this period, perhaps you have a story of your own to share. We would love to hear it!
About halfway through the lecture, coffee and pastries will be available for purchase. All proceeds will go directly toward the re-rigging of the ship.
Registration is free of charge.
Please register by emailing: vanner@gotheborg.se
A warm welcome!

Following growing interest in the future of the East Indiaman Götheborg, Greencarrier now presents detailed plans for a new permanent quay location and an adjacent experience center at Masthuggskajen in Gothenburg.
The ambition is to create a new destination in the city ahead of the 300th anniversary of the Swedish East India Company in 2031. The first vision images are now being presented.
