First two port stops of the Asia Expedition: London and Bremerhaven

We are really excited to now start announcing the stops of the Asia Expedition 2022/2023. First out are London and Bremerhaven!

It is the first time in fifteen years that the ship will sail up the River Thames and salute the Londoners. London is also an important stop for partners. In Bremerhaven, the ship will be the center of attention at a large maritime event with over 350,000 visitors and 80 different ships.

London and Bremerhaven: August 2022

The two stops now released are not the first stops of the expedition, but they are the first to be made public. More ports will be announced in the coming weeks. The ship will be in London 8 – 12 August 2022 and in Bremerhaven 17 – 21 August 2022.

Bremerhaven Maritime Days attract sailing enthusiasts and professional sailers from all over the world. Götheborg has previously visited Bremerhaven in 2010, 2012 and 2015, and these stops have been highly appreciated by both visitors and crew.

In the UK there is a strong historical connection to the East India Companies and great interest in the ship as a replica of an east Indiaman. It is fifteen years since the ship last visited London, in May 2007, on the way home from the first Asia expedition. Both H.M. King Carl Gustaf and H.M. Queen Silvia came on board and visited the ship in London in 2007.

Sail with us!

At the same time that we announce these first two stops, we also open up applications for deckhands. To sail the ship, the crew has to consist of about 70 people. About 20 are professional crew, the others are paying deckhands. As a deckhand it is not necessary to have any experience of sailing, it is for anyone who wants to experience sailing an 18th century ship. The sailing leg London to Bremerhaven will take five days.
We’re also looking for professional crew to join us!

About the Asia Expedition 2022/2023

Götheborg will depart from Gothenburg in June 2022, and arrive in Shanghai in September 2023. The ship will sail the Baltic Sea and Northern Europe, before it continues to the Mediterranean. During winter 2022/2023 the ship will remain in the Mediterranean. It will sail to Asia in spring 2023. The mission for the Asia Expedition is to promote trade relations and use the ship as a unique platform for businesses and partners.

The East Indiaman will become part of a public experience center at Masthuggskajen.

28 April 2026

Greencarrier and the City of Gothenburg have agreed on their ambition to create a long-term home for the East Indiaman at Masthuggskajen. The goal is for the ship to play a central role in a new historical experience center, planned for completion in 2031, and to help create a more vibrant waterfront promenade near Järntorget.

THE FRIENDS OF THE EAST INDIAMAN GÖTHEBORG INVITE YOU TO A WONDERFUL EVENING 19 MARS 18:00

19 March 2026

During the evening we will be joined by Mats Berggren, who during the construction period represented the Swedish Maritime Administration as a determined and persistent inspector, and Marie-Louise Edholm, who took part in building the rigging, has sailed with the ship, and has been responsible for the maintenance of the rig. You will gain insight into traditional craftsmanship, material choices, and the many challenges involved in combining historical authenticity with modern safety and operational requirements. If you were involved during this period, perhaps you have a story of your own to share. We would love to hear it! About halfway through the lecture, coffee and pastries will be available for purchase. All proceeds will go directly toward the re-rigging of the ship. Registration is free of charge. Please register by emailing: vanner@gotheborg.se A warm welcome! The Friends of East Indiaman Götheborg Association
