Asia Expedition 2022/2023

Wilderness Stories and Life on board

On the very first sailing leg of the Asia Expedition 2022/2023, adventurer and photographer Linda Åkerberg joined us on board. She's not only an amazing photographer, she is also a great writer, and on her webpage Wilderness Stories, she describes life on board, her experiences, feelings and the people she shared the Pioneer Leg with. Don't miss this read!!

4-16 JUNI 2022

”Brassa styrbord! Hala hals och skot!”. The commands hail up on deck as I’m lying in my bed below, trying to get some rest before my last night watch. The hull cracks as the waves lift the ship up and down and the sound of water just less than a meter from my head, accompanies the shouting above. And just like that, it all makes sense. I can suddenly understand exactly what they’re doing up there. They’re turning the sails. After almost a week at sea, after days of hard, confusing work, it has, just like that, fallen into place. I smile and lay my head on my pillow and let myself fall asleep, rocked by the ship and the waves of the ocean.

This is how the story starts. Read about the first days of preparing the ship for sailing, and the history that led up to this moment. Hear about all the feelings and thoughts when starting on an adventure like the Asia Expedition for the first time since 2005 – a dream come true. Hear about the ship, the routines on board, steering the ship, and the challenge of climbing the rig. About the challenges of seasickness and making great friends on board.

Sailing on board the Götheborg is magical, and you usually have to be on board to really feel it. But here, through Linda's eyes and experiences, you get as close to that magic as is physically possible without actually being there. Don't miss this read!!

Linda is on board right now, on the sailing leg between Bremerhaven to Lisbon, and will stay on board until Malaga. Follow her on Instagram for great stories (we also share them on the ship's Instagram).

You’re welcome to join us for anything from a full week to just half a day. Unfortunately, we can’t offer accommodation, but we do provide lunch and have work clothes available. Please bring clothes you don’t mind getting dirty to wear underneath, depending on the weather. If you’re interested, please send an email to volunteer@gotheborg.se
