Final two stops in Northern Europe: Copenhagen and Oslo

The ship Götheborg of Sweden today announced the next two stopovers on the Asia Expedition 2022/2023, Copenhagen and Oslo. The two capitals are the last two stops in the Nordic countries, and it is the first time that the ship visits Copenhagen. At the same time, three more sailing legs are also released, which means that the whole Northern European part of the Asia Expedition 2022/2023 is now official.

Götheborg will be in Oslo 28–31 July 2022, and the ship will be moored at Vippetangen by Akershus Fortress. Götheborg of Sweden has been in Oslo twice before, in May 2013 and in June 2015. The ship will be open to visitors in both cities.

“ We welcome the sailing ship Götheborg. The Port of Oslo is responsible for the family event Oslo Havnelangs. The sailing ship Götheborg will be a popular attraction as we extend the event to the whole summer”, said Siv Ellen Omland, head of communication in The Port of Oslo.

The stopover dates for Copenhagen are 20–24 July and will be moored at Nordre Toldbod, just south of Kastellet and close to The Little Mermaid. The ship has been to Denmark three times before, twice in Frederikshavn and once in Aarhus, but it is the first time the ship comes to Copenhagen.

“On our great Asia Expedition, we wanted to visit all the Scandinavian countries before we head towards the Mediterranean and Asia, and we are very excited to visit both Copenhagen and Oslo as the last two stopovers in the Nordic Countries”, said Kristoffer Bennis, Expedition Director at Götheborg of Sweden. “We’ve seen great interest in the ship from the citizens of Oslo on the previous two occasions that we have been there, and we are excited to visit Copenhagen for the first time ever.“

Three sailing legs are simultaneously released for the North European part of the expedition, making it possible to apply to sail on board Götheborg as a deckhand. The three sailing legs are: Stockholm – Copenhagen, Copenhagen – Oslo, and Oslo – London. To sail the ship, a crew of 70 people is needed. About 20 persons are professional crew. The other 50 are deckhands, who are members of the public that sail along for the adventure, experience, and opportunity to learn how to sail an 18th century ship.

Asia Expedition 2022/2023

Götheborg will depart from Gothenburg 8 June 2022, and arrive in Shanghai in September 2023. The ship will sail the Baltic Sea and Northern Europe, before it continues to the Mediterranean. During winter 2022/2023 the ship will remain in the Mediterranean. It will sail to Asia in spring 2023. The mission for the Asia Expedition is to promote trade relations and use the ship as a unique platform for businesses and partners, and to promote solutions for a sustainable future.

Short facts: The ship Götheborg – history

Götheborg is a full-sized replica of an 18th century ship, that was owned by the Swedish East India Company, and that ran aground and sank outside of Gothenburg in 1745. In 1984 marine excavation of the original ship Götheborg was initiated and in 1995 the building of a new Götheborg was started. Eight years later, in 2003, the ship was launched, and between 2005-2007 the ship sailed the historical route to Asia and back. After that several expeditions around Europe were carried out, the latest one in 2015. In 2021 the ship sailed from Gothenburg to Stockholm and back.
