Götheborg of Sweden is coming to Barcelona

The Götheborg is on its way to Asia, and Barcelona is the 13th stopover on the Asia Expedition 2022/2023.
The official stopover for the ship in Barcelona will be 27–30 October, and the ship will be moored at Rambla de Mar. During the official stopover, the ship will be looking its very best and have full crew on board. The ship will also be open to visitors on the weekends during the winter period.

Götheborg is a replica of a merchant ship from the Swedish East India Company that sank outside Gothenburg in 1745. The new ship took ten years to build and was launched in 2003. It is now on a great expedition to Asia, following in the historic footsteps of the original ship.

This is the first time that the ship Götheborg visits Barcelona, and we are looking forward to visiting this beautiful city”, said Kristoffer Bennis, Expedition Director at Götheborg of Sweden. “This stopover is unique, as we are staying for a longer period of time, until March 2023, but during the first few days we are open to visitors .”

The ship is on a two-year long expedition, the Asia Expedition 2022/2023. Following in the historic footsteps of the original ship from the 18th century, the purpose of the expedition is threefold; for people to be able to sail along and experience sailing an 18th century ship, for people to visit the ship in ports, and to promote trade relations in Europe and Asia. On each sailing leg about 50 members of the public can sail along as deckhands. The professional crew consists of about 20 professional sailors, which means that there is between 70–80 people on board for each sailing leg.

The ship has sailed in Europe in 2022, and will stay in Barcelona until it heads on to Asia in March 2023. In September 2023, the ship will reach the expedition’s end destination Shanghai. The Götheborg left Gothenburg 8 June 2022 and has since visited Helsingborg, Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, London, Bremerhaven, Lisbon, Málaga, Nice, Monaco and Valletta. Barcelona is the last stop on this year’s expedition.

Asia Expedition 2022/2023

Götheborg departed from Gothenburg 8 June 2022, and will arrive in Shanghai in September 2023. During the expedition, the ship has sailed in the Baltic Sea and Northern Europe before continuing to the Mediterranean. During winter 2022/2023 the ship will remain in the Mediterranean, in Barcelona. It will continue to Asia in spring 2023. The mission for the Asia Expedition is for paying deckhands to sail along and experience sailing an 18th century ship, to take on board visitors in port and to promote trade relations in Europe and Asia.

Greencarrier and Partners

In 2019 the Swedish logistics company Greencarrier acquired SOIC Ship Management, that operates the ship Götheborg, and thereby secured financing of the expedition to Asia. In spring 2020 Greencarrier also acquired the ship. Behind the decision lies a long-term interest in and commitment to the ship Götheborg, and the conviction that the ship is built to sail and therefore should do that.

Partners to the expedition are also EKN (The Swedish Export Credit Agency) and Vinnova (Sweden’s innovation agency), along with a great number of suppliers that support the expedition in different ways.

Short facts: The ship Götheborg – history

The Götheborg is a full-sized replica of an 18th century ship, that was owned by the Swedish East India Company, and that ran aground and sank outside of Gothenburg in 1745. In 1984 marine excavation of the original ship Götheborg was initiated and in 1995 the building of a new Götheborg was started. Eight years later, in 2003, the ship was launched, and between 2005-2007 the ship sailed the historical route to Asia and back. After that several expeditions around Europe were carried out, the latest one in 2015. In 2021 the ship sailed from Gothenburg to Stockholm and back.

Götheborg of Sweden is the world’s largest ocean-going wooden sailing ship and a unique replica of an 18th century Swedish East India Company ship that sank outside of Gothenburg in 1745. Today, the ship operates with paying deckhands who sail on board to sail along between ports and learn how to sail an 18th century ship. In ports, it is also a popular visitor destination. The ship Götheborg is owned SOIC AB and operated by Rederi Götheborg AB. Both SOIC AB and Rederi Götheborg AB are fully owned subsidiaries of Greencarrier Group, a family-owned company with over 40 years of history specialising in logistics solutions.
