European Tour 2023

Götheborg will sail to Gibraltar

Today it was announced that the second stopover on the European Tour 2023 will be Gibraltar. Between 6–10 April the ship will be moored at Mid Harbour Marina. It's the first time that Götheborg visits Gibraltar, and the ship will of course be open to visitors during the stopover.

Götheborg will sail to Gibraltar

Sailing from Sète in southern France, Gibraltar will be the second stopover on the European Tour 2023. After the stopover in Gibraltar, a long and adventurous sailing leg is waiting, through the Straights of Gibraltar, along the coast of Portugal and across the Bay of Biscay.

Opening hours and tickets

During the stopover, the ship will of course be open to visitors. Opening hours will be announced, and ticket sales will be opened, at a later date. Please stay tuned to book your visit on board Götheborg.

Possible to sail along as a deckhand

As Gibraltar is announced as the second stopover on the European Tour 2023, the possibility to apply to sail along as a deckhand on board on the three first sailing legs, from Barcelona to Sète, and Sète to Gibraltar, are opened up. A longer sailing leg consisting of the first six weeks of sailing has previously been published, with the possibility to sail along for free. With separate sailing legs being published, it is now possible to join just one sailing leg as a paying deckhand.

To sail the ship, a crew of 70 people is needed. About 20 persons are professional crew. The other 50 are deckhands, who are members of the public that sail along for the adventure, experience, and opportunity to learn how to sail an 18th century ship.

THE FRIENDS OF THE EAST INDIAMAN GÖTHEBORG INVITE YOU TO A WONDERFUL EVENING 19 MARS 18:00

19 March 2026

During the evening we will be joined by Mats Berggren, who during the construction period represented the Swedish Maritime Administration as a determined and persistent inspector, and Marie-Louise Edholm, who took part in building the rigging, has sailed with the ship, and has been responsible for the maintenance of the rig. You will gain insight into traditional craftsmanship, material choices, and the many challenges involved in combining historical authenticity with modern safety and operational requirements. If you were involved during this period, perhaps you have a story of your own to share. We would love to hear it! About halfway through the lecture, coffee and pastries will be available for purchase. All proceeds will go directly toward the re-rigging of the ship. Registration is free of charge. Please register by emailing: vanner@gotheborg.se A warm welcome! The Friends of East Indiaman Götheborg Association
