Lisbon stopover announced today

In September, Götheborg will sail to Lisbon, Portugal. It is the first time that the ship visits Portugal, and we're looking forward to a great stopover. We will be in Lisbon 5–8 September 2022 and will be moored at the central location of Cais Rocha Conde de Óbidos. The ship will of course be open to visitors during its stay. Welcome on board!

Lisbon stopover announced today

Lisbon is the eight stopover on the great Asia Expedition 2022/2023, and the last stop before the ship enters the Mediterranean. The sailing leg to Lisbon is also the longest and most adventurous sailing leg on the expedition in 2022. It takes more than two weeks to sail from Bremerhaven to Lisbon, and the leg includes sailing across the Bay of Biscay.

With the central mooring place in Lisbon, and the strong Portuguese seafaring history, we expect great interest in Götheborg during our visit.

"Lisbon is proud to host a stopover of the Ship Götheborg", said Alberto Laplaine Guimaraes, Secretary General City of Lisbon. "The presence of this ship in Lisbon river Tejo, next September, is a great moment and an exciting event for the city, which gives us the opportunity to meet and learn more about this expedition, based in human values, innovation and sustainability."

As Lisbon is announced, the possibility to apply to sail along as a deckhand on board on the eight sailing leg, from Bremerhaven to Lisbon, is also opened up. Götheborg will leave Bremerhaven in Germany the 20th of August and arrive in Lisbon the 5th of September. With 15 days of sailing, this is the longest and most adventurous passage of all our European legs. Sail with us!

The East Indiaman will become part of a public experience center at Masthuggskajen.

28 April 2026

Greencarrier and the City of Gothenburg have agreed on their ambition to create a long-term home for the East Indiaman at Masthuggskajen. The goal is for the ship to play a central role in a new historical experience center, planned for completion in 2031, and to help create a more vibrant waterfront promenade near Järntorget.

THE FRIENDS OF THE EAST INDIAMAN GÖTHEBORG INVITE YOU TO A WONDERFUL EVENING 19 MARS 18:00

19 March 2026

During the evening we will be joined by Mats Berggren, who during the construction period represented the Swedish Maritime Administration as a determined and persistent inspector, and Marie-Louise Edholm, who took part in building the rigging, has sailed with the ship, and has been responsible for the maintenance of the rig. You will gain insight into traditional craftsmanship, material choices, and the many challenges involved in combining historical authenticity with modern safety and operational requirements. If you were involved during this period, perhaps you have a story of your own to share. We would love to hear it! About halfway through the lecture, coffee and pastries will be available for purchase. All proceeds will go directly toward the re-rigging of the ship. Registration is free of charge. Please register by emailing: vanner@gotheborg.se A warm welcome! The Friends of East Indiaman Götheborg Association
