A bucket list sailing adventure

Sail for free on board Götheborg

This sailing leg is now full
If you are interested in sailing with us, please note that it is possible to apply for the separate sailing legs and sail on board as a paying deckhand. Read more here!

We now offer a unique opportunity to sail for free on board the Götheborg during the first six weeks of this year’s sailing adventure. Sign on in Barcelona mid-March and sign off in the Brittany/Normandie area right at the end of April. We promise a great sailing adventure in the Mediterranean, through the Straits of Gibraltar, along the coast of Portugal and across the Bay of Biscay. This is a bucket list sailing adventure that you don’t want to miss!

The ship will leave Barcelona 20 March 2023, but deckhands will sign on already 17 March 2023. The first stopover will be beautiful Sète in the south of France, also known as “Venice of the Languedoc” for its network of canals. After a few days in Sète, the ship heads south again, now making its way towards the Straits of Gibraltar. Before sailing through the Straits of Gibraltar, and heading towards the Bay of Biscay, the ship will make one more portstop (where is still to be announed). Sign off will be 30 April 2023 somewhere in the area around the western tip of France (also still to be announced).

During all the four portstops included in this sailing period, we will have open ship, inviting visitors on board. As usual, you as a deckhand will be involved in station guiding during open ship.

We now offer a select number of people the unique opportunity to sail for free on board the Götheborg, when you sign up for the full first six weeks of this year’s sailing adventure.

The reasons why we offer this sailing period for free are threefold.

  1. We need a full crew for the long sail from the Straits of Gibraltar and across the Bay of Biscay.
  2. We also want a warmed-up crew that are really beginning to find their feet around the ship for this longer sailing leg.
  3. It is very short notice for many people to join six weeks of sailing.

If you were ever to head out on a great adventure, this is your chance!

THE FRIENDS OF THE EAST INDIAMAN GÖTHEBORG INVITE YOU TO A WONDERFUL EVENING 19 MARS 18:00

19 March 2026

During the evening we will be joined by Mats Berggren, who during the construction period represented the Swedish Maritime Administration as a determined and persistent inspector, and Marie-Louise Edholm, who took part in building the rigging, has sailed with the ship, and has been responsible for the maintenance of the rig. You will gain insight into traditional craftsmanship, material choices, and the many challenges involved in combining historical authenticity with modern safety and operational requirements. If you were involved during this period, perhaps you have a story of your own to share. We would love to hear it! About halfway through the lecture, coffee and pastries will be available for purchase. All proceeds will go directly toward the re-rigging of the ship. Registration is free of charge. Please register by emailing: vanner@gotheborg.se A warm welcome! The Friends of East Indiaman Götheborg Association
